Hunger & Homelessness Community Awards Hosted by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, River City Food Bank, Sacramento Housing Alliance, and Hunger Coalition In Partnership with Congresswoman Matsui and Senator Pan.
As a part of national Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, and in keeping with the tradition of focusing on these issues at the time of Thanksgiving, the Hunger & Homelessness Community Awards aim to recognize the unsung heroes in our community.
We hope to use this venue as an opportunity for elected officials and our sponsors to recognize and honor the work being done by individuals and organizations in the Sacramento Region, as well as inspire greater empathy and understanding for our community members who are experiencing hunger and homelessness.
An individual committed to serving our community members who are experiencing hunger and/or homelessness.
Josh's Heart, Inc. is an organization formed by Joshua Brent Moore's parents, Dawn and Don Nahhas. Josh was deeply empathetic to the harsh challenges of those experiencing homelessness, which often brought him to tears. With a history of alcoholism on both sides of the family, Josh struggled with depression and substance abuse from on early age.
Josh was in and out of homelessness and rehabilitation for a long time, but always took the time to show compassion to other community members experiencing homelessness. On August 12, 2016 Josh passed away from complications due to alcoholism. He was 32 years old.
Dawn and Don Nahhas founded Josh’s Heart in memory of their kind-hearted son. and carry out his generous and loving spirit through street outreach and backpack drives. They take a variety of donations, from hygiene products to food and water.
We, Dawn & Don, were honored and humbled to be nominated, let alone, win this award for Josh's Heart. To be chosen as "Volunteer of the Year" in our first year of being a nonprofit surprised us. We will continue to do our very best to serve our homeless community, to remind them, "You Matter!"
